I’ve always believed that the best form of advertising is simply doing the job right. When you go above and beyond to make someone happy, the reward is twofold, you find fulfillment in your work, and new opportunities naturally follow, whether from the couple themselves or those who witness the results. A Connection Born in Istanbul
Two years ago, I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of India and Emir, who were living in Istanbul at the time. It was a beautiful, intimate celebration. In the morning, while India was getting ready in their home at Cihangir, I met her close friend Samya. She impressed me as a deeply empathetic, kind, and incredibly intelligent young woman. As an Associated Press journalist, she had covered stories from Iraq and Lebanon and was later stationed in Ukraine amid the ongoing war. Wow! That evening, at the wedding, I also met her partner, John; a charismatic, energetic, and joyful man. Together, they radiated a special kind of light. Samya even officiated India and Emir’s wedding, adding a personal and heartfelt touch. (Click here for the photos from that wedding.)
That day, Samya and I exchanged social media contacts. Over time, I followed her incredible work on X and Instagram, where she shared both striking personal photography and important news stories. I remember her messaging me after seeing India and Emir’s wedding photos: “I loved them all.” I replied, “Great, I’m waiting for yours then.” She laughed and said, “Haha, we’ll see. But if it happens, you’ll be the first person we call.” Two years later, I received another message. Hello Ufuk, how are you? Can you come to Switzerland for a wedding? Just for a day. Yes, mine. :)”
The Wedding Day Begins in Nyon
Samya and John’s wedding took place in Coppet, a charming town in the Nyon district of the Vaud canton in Switzerland. Their venue? The stunning “Château de Coppet“, a castle straight out of a fairy tale. Even if their wedding had been in the most remote corner of the world, I wouldn’t have missed it. But having it in a magical place like this made it even more special.
Once we finalized all the details, I booked my flight to Geneva and arranged my stay at a hotel near the train station. The morning of the wedding was rainy, but by the time I left my room, the sun had already broken through the clouds. A short 15 minute train ride brought me to Nyon, where I walked downhill toward the lake. I was immediately struck by the beautiful Swiss houses lining the shore and the breathtaking view of Lake Geneva.
The preparations took place at “Hotel Real Nyon by HappyCulture“, a boutique hotel with an extraordinary lakeside view. It was great to see familiar faces in the preparation room, and the soft light filtering through the large windows made for some truly beautiful shots. The relaxed atmosphere, the elegant yet understated setting, and the natural chemistry of everyone present made for an ideal start to the day.
A Fairytale Wedding at Nyon Chateau de Coppet
After preparations, we all headed to Château de Coppet. Samya, who is involved in documentary photography due to her job, gave great importance to natural photographs. We started with an outdoor first look session, keeping things fun and spontaneous. John and Samya saw each other for the first time on a tree lined road across from the château. From there, we walked to the pier, taking photos along the way, capturing their laughter, excitement, and deep connection.
The ceremony took place in the castle’s garden around 5 PM. Amid heartfelt speeches and vows, they exchanged rings while Josh Taylor & Family Ensemble played live music. Guests joined in singing hymns. And as the couple was pronounced married, a shower of confetti filled the air. The celebration continued with a cocktail reception in the garden, where the sun cast a golden glow over the guests. We then gathered everyone by the pool for a large group photo session; full of fun, energy, and all sorts of creative combinations. As night fell, the wedding dinner was held at Château de Coppet La Cave Restaurant. The evening’s heartfelt conversations slowly transitioned into an electrifying party, which lasted until 2 AM.
What Did I Feel?
It was actually a very short trip for me. I couldn’t really enjoy the region because of the intensity of the shooting. I woke up late in the morning, did some shopping and a quick tour of Geneva, and went to the airport after lunch. It was really exciting for me to shoot with AP photojournalists around me. It was really exciting to be together with these people that I respect professionally.
After delivering the photos, I received a message from Samya: “You are a genius. OMG, OMG, OMG. How am I going to work today? Ufuk!!! The photos are amazing, thank you so much!! What beautiful images to remember this day!” This is my motivation. There is nothing more rewarding than capturing beautiful moments and making people happy. Photography is not just about taking great pictures, it’s about creating lasting memories that bring joy.
